California was nothing more than a stepping stone for me. Just another place I had to go through to reach that next level or stage in my life. The world was my oyster, and I couldn’t wait to leave you behind to chase my dreams.
But suddenly, things changed. Things changed fast. And it hit me like a ton of bricks.
After reading the above article, I’m nearly brought to tears of joy. I’ve never, ever in my whole life have taken time and energy to express how proud I am to be a Californian until today.
How could I have been so blind? My eyes were on the prize, but to a fault? Overly fixated, I lost sight of what was most important for me, even my own home. Now, I see my nature and it rearing its ugly head. It always chases after the unknown, but never settling or being grateful for what it has.
I had you wrong. You’re more than just phenomenal weather. You’re more than just gorgeous looking people. You’re more than just a home to artists, storytellers, and dreamers. You’re a leader of this very country. Wherever California goes, the states will follow.
In time of political strife and adversity, it’s easy for us to do what’s easy rather than what’s right. It would be easy to simply accept what is given to us by authority, however fair or unfair it is. For California, standing up to forces of divisiveness is doing what’s right.
Thank you California. I stand by you.
